In this program, Dr. Wertheimer looks at barriers to recognizing pain in verbal, non-verbal, and dementia patients.

Surprisingly, verbal patients may not even recognize their own pain. For other verbal patients, the philosophy to suffer in silence may have been ingrained on them from early years. Still prevalent is the fear of being considered weak when reporting pain or the fear of addiction to pain medications. For non-verbal patients, changes in eating, sleeping, or other behaviors may indicate pain.

Topics: pain indicators, assessing pain management
Skill Competency: Reporting Pain
Audience: Long-term care, hospice and home health care staff; allied health training programs
