The symptoms and behaviors associated with each stage of Alzheimer’s disease and other progressive dementia disorders place these patients at the top of the list for potential abuse.

Forgetfulness, confusion, agitation and emotional outbursts associated with the early stages can be frustrating to caregivers. As the disease progresses, care becomes greater and the patient becomes less and less able to communicate. At this point the caregiver connection can erode, but the patient can’t complain.

Unable to care for themselves and unable to communicate, they become the most vulnerable victims for neglect and abuse. Filmed at Edenwald.

Topics: elder abuse, neglect
Audience:
Nursing assistants and other staff in long-term care, assisted living and day care
