In this video, Dr. Peter Rabins and nursing staff discuss steps to take after identifying situations which trigger catastrophic reactions and other fearful behaviors. These behaviors are disruptive to the care and the emotional well-being of Alzheimer’s patients and this DVD presents ways to prevent these fear-based behaviors from happening; and explore positive solutions to minimize them.
The first step in preventing fearful behaviors is developing a relationship with the Alzheimer’s patient, knowing about their life and the things they did and enjoyed when they were younger. Nursing assistants in this program say this connection is very important to making the person with Alzheimer’s disease feel safe when providing care.
The nursing staff featured in this program say that whether you regularly care for the resident or if you are new to providing care, always remind the resident who you are and explain what care you will be providing before and while you are doing it. They also stress that the tone of your voice, mannerisms and facial expressions can reassure or frighten the resident. For example, these nursing assistants say that insisting something must be done will often escalate situations and cause agitation, refusal of care or catastrophic reactions. Dr. Rabins discusses solutions such as using a reassuring voice to calm residents, using distraction and discussing familiar things which give pleasure. Find a way to enter into their world, accept their reality, understand their fears and take them to an emotionally safe place.
